Northern Railway Accelerates Green Energy Transition by Adding 2.2 MW Rooftop Solar Capacity in April - May 2026

Reaffirming its commitment to sustainability, energy security, decarbonization, and environmental stewardship, Northern Railway has achieved another significant milestone in its renewable energy journey by commissioning 2,224 kWp (approximately 2.2 MW) of grid-connected rooftop solar power plants across railway stations and service buildings during the first two months of FY 2026–27 (April–May 2026).

With these new installations, Northern Railway’s cumulative solar capacity has increased to 28,347 kWp (approximately 28.35 MW), further strengthening Indian Railways’ efforts towards decarbonization, achievement of net-zero carbon emission goals, and promotion of environmentally sustainable transportation.

During the first two months of FY 2026–27, Northern Railway’s solar installations generated approximately 3.4 million units (MU) of clean electricity, resulting in an estimated energy cost saving of ₹2.2 crore. The clean energy generated is expected to offset approximately 2,820 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, making a meaningful contribution towards climate change mitigation, decarbonization of railway operations, and supporting the Government of India’s vision of a cleaner and greener future. In addition to reducing dependence on conventional sources of energy, the initiative enhances the sustainability, resilience, and environmental performance of railway operations.

Northern Railway continues to actively expand its renewable energy footprint through the deployment of solar power projects, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to sustainable development, energy efficiency, decarbonization, and reduction of carbon emissions. These initiatives are playing an important role in transforming Indian Railways into one of the world’s largest green transportation networks and advancing the nation’s clean energy and climate goals.
