Supervisors Training Centre

The Supervisors' Training Centre (STC), Northern Railway, Charbagh, Lucknow, formerly known as the System Technical School, was established on 14 January 1956 to cater to the training requirements of technical supervisors of the Mechanical and Electrical Departments of Northern Railway. In its initial years, trainees were designated as Apprentice Mechanics and Apprentice Train Examiners.

The Centre was established in the historic Charbagh area of Lucknow, adjacent to the Northern Railway Locomotive Workshop. The area has historical significance, as the premises were associated with the old gun factory during the British period. In its earlier form, the training establishment was equipped with machines and facilities for imparting practical training in basic mechanical operations to artisan staff. With the changing technological landscape and evolving requirements of Indian Railways, the Centre progressively expanded and modernized its training facilities to meet the present and future needs of railway supervisors.

In 2009–2010, STC was shifted to its present building at Charbagh, Lucknow, which is developed with modern infrastructure and improved facilities for imparting quality technical and supervisory training. The Centre is conveniently located near Lucknow Charbagh Railway Station and is easily accessible by road and rail.

Today, STC Charbagh has emerged as an important training institution of Northern Railway, providing structured training to Junior Engineers (JEs), Senior Section Engineers (SSEs), supervisors and other railway personnel in various technical disciplines. The Centre has modern laboratories and training facilities covering important areas of railway engineering and maintenance, including Diesel, Carriage & Wagon, Air Conditioning, Train Lighting, Electrical and Metallurgical laboratories.

The Centre also has specialized Centres of Excellence for Wheel Slide Protection (WSP) systems of LHB coaches and welding processes, providing trainees with practical exposure to modern railway technologies, equipment and maintenance practices. The Centre is continuously upgrading its facilities in line with technological advancements and the changing requirements of Indian Railways, with initiatives towards developing advanced facilities such as Automation and 3D Modelling laboratories.

The classrooms are equipped with modern training aids such as multimedia projectors, interactive whiteboards, computer systems and other digital learning resources. Emphasis is laid on practical and experiential learning so that trainees can effectively relate classroom concepts with actual field conditions.

STC provides comprehensive residential and welfare facilities for trainees, including a library, hostel, mess, sports facilities, recreation club and outdoor games ground. Yoga and meditation programmes are also organized to promote the physical fitness, mental well-being and overall personality development of trainees.
