Presently, Delhi Division is maintaining 63 Mail/express trains on ownership basis, which includes 12 Rajdhani, 4 Duronto & remaining important train services. Division having the coach holding of around 2750 coaches that comprises about 1000 Shatabdi & Rajdhani coaches & 1750 Mail/express & other passenger coaches.
In order to ensure safety & reliability of coaching stock ‘Periodic Overhauling (POH) Schedule’ is the mandatory workshop attention item for all categories of coaching stock. In addition, ‘Intermediate Overhauling (IOH) Schedule’ was introduced for all the coaches (other than Shatabdi & Rajdhani coaches) on 9-month cycle as a substitute to prevalent 6-monthly ‘C’- schedule at open line depots in the division. POH periodicity has been increased from 12-month cycle to 18-months cycle for these coaches. Shatabdi & Rajdhani coaches will continue to be attended for IOH attention at workshops.
Delhi Division is required to carry outapprox 100 IOH per month. Till recentlylike many other divisions this work was being done in workshops such at Jagadri and Lucknow. This kept the coaches out of the system for almost 20 days primarily due to high transit time.Recently, this work has been started within the division due to special initiative taken by the General Manager Mr S K Budalakoti. This required development of infrastructure and some special logistics arrangement which were mobilized due to extra ordinary enthusiasm shown by Sri Ashwani Loahani, Divisional Railway Manager, Delhi Division. On 2nd September 2011 100th IOH coachof New Delhi area was flagged off by Sri A K Puthia, Chief Mechanical Engineer Northern Railway which was an important milestone in this endeavour.
This arrangement is going to result in considerable revenue saving andbetter availability of coaches for traffic use. With such increased availability it will be easier to provide coaches for augmentation specially in the peak season .
