EMU Car Shed, Ghaziabad




EMU Car shed was established in the year 1982 to cater the suburban need of National Capital Region of Delhi. It was a prestigious project on the eve of Asiad’ 1982. The Shed is  spread  over  an  area  of  about  62.5 acres  with  a  covered  area  of  7.5 acres. The Shed is committed to safety, reliability and passenger amenities and has been accredited with ISO: 9001-2008 for Quality Management System, ISO 14001:2015 for Environment Management System, OHSAS 18001:2007 for Health and Safety & 50001:2011 for Energy Management System.   .

The Shed with an initial small holding of 04 rakes has rapidly moved on growing path with the present holding of 22 EMU and 42 MEMU rakes. Initial service on DLI Ring Rail was of just 06 coaches. To cater the need of growing suburban traffic, the Shed is presently running composition upto 15 Car EMU services and 20 Car MEMU services.   The services are not limited to NR alone but also extended to NCR, NER, places like Barabanki (536 Km), NLDM (359 Km), SLN (646), HRI (609) and ASR (451 Km).  

Services dedicated exclusively to ladies are running in New Delhi – Palwal, New Delhi -Panipat & New Delhi - Ghaziabad sections for the convenience of lady commuters in the peak hours.

Role of The Shed

The Shed is responsible for the comprehensive maintenance of EMU and MEMU coaches based in N. Rly except minor repair of 13 MEMU rakes by SRE Car Shed. In addition to the scheduled inspections and running repairs, the Shed is carrying out the POH of EMU/MEMU coaches, POH of Tower wagons of NR, NCR, NER & RE and corrosion repairs of coaches/Tower wagons also.

Important Land Marks

1. First EMU train service in Delhi Ring Railway started on 15.08.82 

2. First MEMU service in DLI-PNP section started on 23.02.95

3. Shed has been accredited with ISO: 9001:2008 by IRQS, Mumbai.

4. First Ladies special train service (NDLS-PWL section) of Northern Railway was flagged off by Hon’ble Minister of Railways on 05.08.09.

5Running of MEMU rake with toilet facilities started on 20.10.10.


620 Car MEMU rake started on 08.10.2017 between TKJ to BSC.


7Shed has been accredited with ISO 14001:2015 for EMS & OHSAS 18001:2007 & 50001:2011 for Energy Management System.  


EMU & MEMU Train Services

The Shed is presently catering 263 train services per day over N.R., N.C.R., N.E. R & W.C.R. with a train km earning of 316 km per day for EMU and 438 Km per day for MEMU. System map is given below.





Advantages of EMU/MEMU Services

The running of passenger trains with EMU / MEMU rakes offers following advantages:     

1. High acceleration / deceleration resulting in reduced running time.

2. Reduced requirement of crew (Assistant Loco Pilot is not required).


3. Reversal of engine is not required at terminals, thereby reducing shunting operations and terminal congestion.


4. Eliminates box porters.


5. Reduced cost of transportation.


6. Improved reliability as there are more powered vehicles.

7. MEMU rake capacity is 3600 passengers as compared to 2160 of conventional trains for a 12 car rake i.e.     increase of 65 percent under dense crush load conditions.

Achievements during 2018-19

1. Liquidation of All Overdue POH coaches, which was troubling the shed since 2013-14.

As on 01.04.18, there were 94 coaches POH overdue by October-18 shed liquidated all overdue POH coaches. POH overdue problem was troubling the shed since 2013-14.

2. Replacement of overaged Axle roller bearing over 20 years of age.

In April 2018, Total 157 coaches (39 MC + 118 TC) were running with overage axle roller bearings over 20 years of age. Shed has replaced all overaged bearings in all motor coach/trailer coach upto Dec-2018.

3. Recertification of Shed with ISO 9001:2015.

EMU Car Shed Ghaziabad is certified with ISO 9001:2008 since 2012. Up gradation of shed with ISO 9001:2015 is under process and audit schedule is due on 18.03.19 & 19.03.19. It is likely to be certified by end of March 2019.

4. Corrosion repair of EMU/MEMU coaches.

Shed has started this activity in July 2018 and till Feb-2019 total 12 coaches have been repaired.

5. Ultrasonic testing of bolster hanger pins.

Till June 2018, Zyglo testing of Bolster hanger pins was being done during POH. Shed has started Ultrasonic testing of the same since July 2018 and total 2136 pins have been tested till Feb-2019. Ultrasonic testing of axle is doing regularly and there is no overdue axle for UT on date.

6. Completion of short composition of rakes. 

Due to various reasons, short composition of rakes were running online till September 2018. From Oct-2018 shed has completed all rakes with prescribed coach formation.

 9. Extension of EMU service.

  During the year, EMU train service no.64167 has been extended from Ex-ALJN to TDL.
